Railroads
The railroad was first developed in Britain by George Stephenson. These railroads were imported to the U.S. until the American Civil War. In 1827 the city of Baltimore decided that since they do not have a canal, the only way to economically compete with New York, is by creating a railroad system. Railroad was named the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. This is the first chartered railroad in the United States. The transcontinental railroad was a railroad that stretched across the United States, the last spike was pounded in on May 10, 1869.
